NEWSLETTER
2009
IMPORTANT
NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS:
At
our range meeting in July, the club voted to add a $30.00 assessment to all
members that fail to attend a work party for range improvement and repair or
served at club training functions. We
did not call any special work day in 2008. We will do so in 2009. There will be
no work day assessment for 2008. There were many of our members that helped the
club in 2008. The Officers are appreciative of your assistance.
VANDALISM:
We
are going to replace the 2x8x10” cross member target carrier system at the
McComb Range. It has been shot to
pieces. Some members have been stapling targets to it and sitting cans and other
objects on top of it. There has also been damage to the turning pistol targets.
If you are caught placing targets on the cross beams or the railroad ties in
front of the turning target mechanism, you are in violation of club rules. You
will lose your membership in the club, if you cause damage to any of our
equipment.
CLUB
DUES:
Quarterly
payments for conditional life members are due on Jan 1st, April 1st, July 1st
and October 1st. If there are any questions call me at 601-249-3315.
The quarterly dues are $30.00.
ANNUAL
DUES AND ANNUAL MEETING:
Associate
members owe Annual dues on January 1st.
The gate combination will be changed after the Annual Meeting. The annual
meeting will be at Mr. Whisker’s Restaurant in McComb on January 24, 2008 at
6:30PM.
The Club’s Annual Dues are $50.00 per year. Dues
for Spousal Members are $10.00. Junior dues are $10.00.
CLUB
NEWS:
CLUBHOUSE
– AIR RIFLE RANGE AND USE OF CLUB EQUIPMENT:
We
have central air conditioning and heat in our range building. There are officers
AT THE RANGE on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Any club range equipment may be
used by members, on these evenings. Call first to be sure we will be there.
SEMI-ANNUAL
CLUB MEETING:
We
will call a meeting at the clubhouse in July. We will let everyone know when it
will be held.
NRA
MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED FOR SGC MEMBERS:
We
passed a rule in the club, in 1988, that we would require NRA Membership for all
Southwest Gun Club Members. We will
require a current NRA membership card or payment before we accept dues this year
or issue cards to life members. Our
club is now a NRA Membership Recruiter. I can take the money for NRA memberships and cash back on
each new membership or renewal will reward the club. The club has been awarded the Gold Club Award and 100%
membership is required. The Range
Grant relies on the club being 100% NRA Members.
There is a Membership without magazine that is $10.00 per year.
Many of our new members have chosen this membership.

COMBAT RIFLE MATCH:
We
will conduct a Precision Combat Match on Saturday, January 17, 2009. This is an
Army training match, designed for “ASSAULT RIFLES”. Any military semi-auto
or bolt action capable of rapid firing 10 shots may be used. The firing is done
at 100-200-300 and 400 yards. It is a lot of fun and I would like to see some of
the members take advantage of this match. At this match we will also fire the
300 yard stage of the Rattle Battle.
Due
to the club having to purchase future stocks of .30 M2 Ball ammo, we will have
to charge $.20 per round for .30 M2 Ball ammo. Junior club members will not have

GARAND CLINIC AT McOMB RANGE:
May
30th, 2009
This
event is scheduled for this date. Cost
of the clinic will be $40.00. For
more information call the contact number for the Secretary. We will furnish the
use of an M1 rifle, 55 rounds of ammunition, instruction and coaching.
4H,
CMP, NRA AND USA JUNIOR SHOOTING NEWS:
We
are using our building for 4H Practices and other Junior Activities. We will
conduct 4H practices as noted on the schedule. Any club member that wishes to help the Junior shooting
program is more than welcome to attend these practices. Helping with Junior
Programs will count as a work-day. We are not going to shoot shotgun as a
regular event at our 4H practices. The cost of the shells and the clay targets
amounts to $.27 for each shot fired. The use of air rifle and pistol as well as
.22rf rifle and pistol is much more economical than shotgun shooting.
Our
Junior shooters signed up in the club are eligible to participate in 4H Shooting
Sports as long as they join 4H. There
is no fee for joining 4H.
In
2008, we have received a NRA Foundation Grant for $2250.00. This money will buy
five Ruger 10/22 .22 rf Rifles and various accessories.
We
are conducting a NRA Junior Rifle and Pistol Camp on June 7-12, 2009. For more
details contact the Secretary.
We
are selling the Remington 513T rifle we have in stock for $400 each. The money
generated will be used to buy better .22rf Target rifles and other equipment.
Call the Secretary for details.
Our
monthly NRA-USAS matches at the indoor range in McComb are open to all Junior
shooters. Matches marked Open are open to all shooters, including Adults. For
more info call 504-343-7597.
NRA
YOUTH HUNTER EDUCATION CHALLENGE:
We
are conducting this match at the McComb Range facility on Saturday May 23, 2009.
It will consist of .22rf rifle, shotgun, muzzle loading rifle, archery and a
test on Hunter Safety. For more information, email or call me at the numbers in
the letterhead.
ACTION
PISTOL NEWS:
We
have not named a match director for this program. We have two of the motors
working on the mover and Dusty Rhoads has donated two more motors to the club to
fix the mover. We will discuss the future of this program at the Club’s Annual
Meeting. Without a Match Director, we will not have a program.
NRA
INTERNATIONAL AIR PISTOL LEAGUE:
We
will be conducting these events each Monday (except as noted), starting on
January 5th, 2009. We will have relays at 3:00PM and 5:00PM. The fee
will be $5.00 per night. This will include the use of a Baikal IZH-46M pistol,
pellets and targets. Adult Men will shoot 60 shots each night and Junior and
Women shooters will shoot 40 shots but they can shoot 60 shots if they desire to
do so. For more information call the Secretary. If you really want to learn to
shoot a pistol with one hand, this is the way to do it. It is the most
challenging pistol sport I have ever participated in.
NRA
MID-RANGE POSITION BP TARGET RIFLE:
This
event is quite a challenge. Our
club is conducting 7 tournaments this year.
The rifle has to be a single shot rifle with exterior hammer.
It must be loaded with lead bullets and Black Powder.
The cartridges may use a duplex smokeless load if desired.
The sights have to be the vernier tang type with no micrometer clicks in
the sight adjustments. Call
the contact number for more information.
TRAP
SHOOT AND AIR RIFLE AND .22 RF PISTOL PRACTICE:
This
event will be in McComb on January 24th, 2009. We will shoot trap on
the new ¾ cock Do-all traps. It will depend on the shooter, how may 25 shot
rounds he wants to shoot. The fee will be $4.00 per round of 25 shots. The
course of fire will be 13 singles and 6 pairs of doubles. We will also open the
air rifle range and make our air rifles and pistols available. If the weather is
bad, we will shoot indoors with our air rifles and pistols. Members wanting to
shoot the air rifle and pistol will have a $5.00 fee. This will cover targets
and pellets. The fee for the .22 RF Pistol Practice will be $5.00. The Annual
Meeting will be the same evening as this event at Mr. Whiskers.
NRA
PERSONAL PROTECTION IN THE HOME:
March
27TH & 28TH, 2009
This
class is very informative and helpful for people interested in protecting their
home. It not only teaches basic firearms safety and marksmanship but it
instructs the students the way to make their homes safer from home invasion. In
States where a firearms proficiency class is needed for issuance of a Concealed
Carry Permit, this course will meet these requirements. We will conduct our
classroom session in the SGC Clubhouse in McComb. The fee for this class is
$45.00, an increase due to the increase in cost of ammunition.
